Processes produce products and services, and are the heart of any organization. The environment of an organization is constantly changing. Developments in IT, quickly changing customer needs, and changes in laws and regulations require that organizations continuously adapt to these changes. Changes in processes are therefore inescapable.

Business Process Management (BPM) covers the effective and efficient design, implementation, and execution of business processes. BPM contains the integral solutions on the strategic, tactical and operational levels in the organization. Elements of BPM are the different responsibilities in an organization, continuous improvement of processes, and in some cases implementation of process management software (BPM suites).

BPM: Grip on processes

Many organizations are implementing BPM, or will be starting implementing BPM on short term. Motives are clear. A better grip on business processes means a better result for customers, a decrease of cost, and better process performance.
How pressing the need for BPM may be, implementing BPM is still a major effort. Translating strategic goals via tactical objectives into operational guidelines, results in problems for many organizations. If the strategy is unclear, designing processes and defining performance indicators will be a problem. Steering on performance indicators is therefore hard. In addition, without a clear process design, implementing a BPM suite in the organization will be a disaster.
